Directions lie in the foundations of Vastu Shastra. Directions continuously exert their influence on Vastu Shastra. It is necessary to determine the directions correctly and the right knowledge of direction is very important to make a building structure according to Vastu.
In Vastu Shastra, there are mainly 8 directions that are given utmost importance. They are:
EAST (Purav)
Defects:
The representative planet for the east direction is Sun (Surya) which itself is a big power that nobody can match. Sun Lord is considered to be the creator, guardian, protector and illuminator of the universe. It is believed in Vastu Shastra that a house that is built with ample sun energy entering into space is considered as an ideal house. It is responsible for overall prosperity, growth and power. East direction should be very much open, light, clean and well ventilated. East direction full of litter and dirt is a Vastu offence. It can create negative influences and obstructions in your life like conflicts in family life, mental health issues in relation to money and problems related to children.
Remedies:
1) East direction should be very much open, light, clean and well ventilated.
2) Place Surya Yantra on the wall facing East direction in the house and chant Aditya Hridaya Stotram. Also, get the blessings from Lord Sun through prayers by facing in the east direction during sunrise.
WEST (Pashchim)
Defects:
The representative planet for the west direction is Saturn (Shani). The corresponding lord for the west direction is Lord Varun. Saturn is a planet that represents good luck as well as bad luck. On the good luck front, the west direction is associated with marital bliss and business prosperity. On the bad luck front, it is associated with health issues, financial problems, social issues and legal matters.
Remedies:
1) As the corresponding lord for the west direction is Lord Varun, place Varun Yantra in the house to get rid of the west direction defects.
2) As the representative planet for the west direction is Lord Saturn, place Shani Yantra in the house and chant Shani Stotram. Observe fasting on Saturdays.
3) The wall in the west direction should be kept higher than the wall in the east direction of the house. The west direction of the house should be decorated with huge plants and trees.
NORTH (Uttara)
Defects:
The representative planet for the north direction is Mercury (Buddh). The corresponding lord for the north direction is Lord Kuber who is known for wealth and prosperity. North is a very good direction. Buddh will provide fruits in accordance to the planet it is associated with. If it is linked with an auspicious planet, it will bear good results but if linked with an inauspicious planet, it will bear bad results. This direction represents knowledge and wisdom and hence it is also called wealth and career direction. On the contrary, it represents health problems and deprivation of material pleasures.
Remedies:
1) Place Buddh Yantra in the pooja room of the house. The walls of the house should be painted green.
2) Follow the pooja rituals on Wednesday and wear Panna Ratna Swarna
SOUTH (Dakshin)
Defects:
The representative planet for the south direction is Mars (Mangal). This planet governs the worldly matters in your life. If there are no south defects, Mangal will prove to be a positive and influential planet in your life. If there happens to be a pit, well or tank construction in the south direction of the house, the inmates might have to face financial instability, health issues, family conflicts, accidents and untimely death.
Remedies:
1) Place Mangal Yantra and Vastu Mangalkari Toran on the door in the south direction of the house. Place Hanuman Yantra in the pooja room and worship it every day.
2) Place an image/idol of Lord Ganesha inside and outside of the entrance door.
3) Closed, heavy walls and thorny trees in the south direction will keep the inmates of the house safe.
NORTH-EAST (Ishaanya)
Defects:
The representative planet for the northeast direction is Jupiter (Guru/Brahaspati) and the corresponding lord for the northeast direction is Lord Rudra. Brahaspati is considered the most pious, pure and positive planet of all. Northeast is a very pious direction. This direction gives overall prosperity, health and wealth. The planet is known to give knowledge and spiritual growth. If there are northeast defects, there are chances it might affect various aspects like family health, business finances, infertility and positive vibrations of the house. Therefore, one should always make an effort to keep the northeast direction pious, pure and defect-free.
Remedies:
1) The representative planet for the northeast direction is Brahaspati and the corresponding lord for the northeast direction is Rudra which also represents Lord Vishnu so Lord Vishnu should be worshipped.
2) Place Brass Shri Yantra in the house and chant Shri Suktam and Shri Vishnu Sahasaranama Stotram.
NORTH-WEST (Vayavya):
Defects:
The representative planet for the northwest direction is Moon (Chandra) and the corresponding lord for the northwest direction is Lord Vayu. The planet Chandra can prove to be either advantageous or disadvantageous for the inmates. This planet can bring both positive and negative energy to the house. Northwest direction is the bearer of creating either friendships or enmity in the life of inmates. The wrong usage of the northwest direction will invite troubles like physical illness, ill-temper, instability, restlessness and more enemies. On the contrary, if this direction complements Vastu principles, there are chances one will have more friends who will prove to be beneficial to the inmates. Keep the walls in the northwest direction lower than the walls in the northeast direction in the balconies and porches of the house to make it defect-free.
Remedies:
1) Observe fasting on Mondays and offer milk and prayers to Shivalinga.
2) As the representative planet for the northwest direction is Moon (Chandra), place Chandra Yantra in the house.
3) Place an image/idol of Lord Ganesha of white colour along with Shri Yantra at the entrance door.
4) Paint the walls of the house with cream colour or any other light/pastel colours.
South-East (Aagneya)
Defects:
The representative planet for the southeast direction is Venus (Shukra) and the corresponding lord for the southeast direction is Lord Ganesha. This planet represents creativity, artistry, friendships, luxury and beauty. The positive influence of this planet leads to worldly pleasures, family bliss and marital bliss. If there are defects in the southeast direction, it will create health issues and strained relationships in the life of inmates.
Remedies:
1) Place an image/idol of Lord Ganesha of green colour inside and outside of the entrance door.
2) Place Shukra Yantra and chant Shukra Beej Mantra. Also, place Shri Yantra and chant Shri Suktam Mantra.
South-West (Nairutya)
Defects:
The representative planet for the southwest direction is Rahu which highly influences our life. It is considered a very powerful planet and hence there is no solid remedy to its negative effects. This planet has to be calmed down in order to ward off its side effects. If there are defects in the southwest direction of the house, then accidental death, family conflicts, health issues and financial crises are bound to happen to the inmates.
Remedies:
1) Place Rahu Yantra in the pooja room and chant Rahu Beej Mantra and Rahu Strotam.
2) Place an image/idol of Lord Ganesha of blue colour/mixed colours at the entrance door.
3) This direction should be elevated and filled with a very heavy load.
